Development Process

The Breath Before Website Development Page Image.png

The Breath Before is built through a hybrid creative workflow. Each chapter begins with writing, pacing, storyboards, and panel direction before being shaped into the greyscale, ink-washed visual style of the comic. The development goal is always clarity, atmosphere, and emotional weight - ensuring every page serves the story at the heart of the world.

Origins of Avros

The Breath Before began as a home brewed tabletop adventure that has now been running for over six years, with more than 1,500 hours of play shaping its world, characters, and emotional core. Every chapter of the comic carries echoes of those shared stories.

From Tabletop to Script

The sprawling and ongoing campaign is being adapted into a structured comic narrative - written, refined,  and broken into chapters, scenes, and panel beats. Storyboards map out pacing, dialog, and the emotional rhythm of each moment.

Visual Direction & Planning

Each page is staged and composed before any artwork is created. Panel flow, atmosphere, and character posture are planned to ensure the visuals support the story's tone and clarity.

AI-Assisted Panel Creation

Panels ae built using AI-assisted imagery - crafted through detailed prompts, refined iterations, and reference-guided direction. Every visual is shaped manually to maintain consistency with the comic's ink-washed aesthetic.

Final Draft & Release

Chapters undergo second-pass and final-pass reviews to refine flow, readability, and emotional impact. Once the pages feel cohesive, the chapter is assembled and prepared for release into the growing saga.

Long-Form Viability

The scale of The Breath Before — a multi‑volume saga adapted from more than six years of tabletop storytelling — is not something a single creator could sustain through traditional art pipelines. The hybrid workflow allows a single creator to produce consistent, atmospheric visuals at a pace that matches the scope of the story. Without this process, the full saga simply could not exist in a complete, long‑term form.
